Futures trade on regulated exchanges. The CME Group is the main marketplace for many popular U.S. futures products, including equity index, energy, metals, interest rate, and agricultural contracts. The exchange standardizes the contracts and provides the central venue where buyers and sellers meet.

Your broker connects you to the exchange. When you place an order, it routes through your platform and broker to the market. Once matched, the clearing system steps in to guarantee performance between counterparties, which reduces the risk that the person on the other side fails to honor the trade.

This structure is one reason futures are attractive to active traders. The market is centralized, transparent, and highly regulated. You still carry trading risk, but the mechanics of execution and clearing are designed to be orderly.
